The Science Behind STAS: How Plant-Based Ingredients Enhance Skin Health

Why Plant-Based Ingredients?

Plant-based ingredients have been revered in skincare for centuries, with natural compounds offering healing, anti-inflammatory, and protective properties. Ingredients like green tea extract or chamomile have long been recognized for their ability to soothe irritated skin, while modern science has allowed us to extract the most potent elements of plants and combine them with advanced formulations.

At STĀS, we use plant-based ingredients that are both natural and effective. We don’t promote the idea that "natural" always means "better." Instead, we blend the pure benefits of plants with lab-tested ingredients to ensure your skin gets the best care possible.

Key Plant-Based Ingredients in STĀS Products

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

Niacinamide is a versatile ingredient derived from plant-based fermentation. It helps balance oil production, minimize the appearance of pores, and reduce redness. We include it in our formulations because it’s one of the most researched and reliable ingredients for skin health, even though it’s not 100% plant-derived. It's present in our Repair Mask and Repair Face Bar, and helps to strengthen the skin barrier, even skin tone and calm inflammation.

Green Tea Extract (Ryoku-Cha Ekisu)

Sourced from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant, green tea extract is rich in antioxidants, helping protect your skin from environmental stressors like pollution and UV damage. It also has soothing, anti-inflammatory properties that make it perfect for sensitive or reactive skin. We use green tea extract in our Repair Mask and Repair Face Bar to calm redness and shield the skin from free radicals.

Tea Tree Leaf Oil

Tea tree oil is a natural essential oil known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s widely used in formulations for acne-prone skin because it helps fight breakouts and reduces redness without stripping the skin. Tea tree oil is present in our Clarifying Complex Serum and Clarifying Cream to help reduce acne-causing bacteria, soothe inflammation, and promote clear skin.

Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract

Chamomile, derived from delicate flowers, has been used for centuries for its powerful calming and anti-inflammatory properties. Rich in antioxidants like apigenin, it helps to protect the skin from environmental stressors while soothing irritation. This makes it particularly beneficial for those with sensitive or reactive skin, as it works to reduce redness and promote a balanced complexion. We’ve harnessed the power of chamomile in our Clarifying Complex Serum to not only calm and heal but also to strengthen the skin’s natural barrier. Gentle enough for all skin types, this serum doubles as a spot treatment, helping to reduce inflammation and promote faster healing. While we don’t encourage popping blemishes, this serum can assist in soothing and repairing skin when needed.

Witch Hazel (Hamamelis Virginiana) Extract

Derived from the witch hazel plant, this natural astringent is a powerhouse for acne-prone skin. Known for its ability to control excess oil, tighten pores, and reduce inflammation, it helps keep skin clear and balanced. In our Clarifying Cream, witch hazel works to soothe irritation while minimizing the appearance of pores, leaving skin feeling refreshed and calm. Its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties also make it an effective ingredient for reducing breakouts and calming redness, making it a key player in maintaining a healthy, balanced complexion.

Skincare Trends: Hot Ingredients We Don’t Use

While STĀS focuses on our carefully curated ingredients, the beauty industry is abuzz with a few trending plant-based ingredients that are gaining popularity in 2024. Although we don’t include these in our current formulations, they’re making waves for their innovative benefits.

Why Ectoin is one of skincare's hottest ingredients in 2024

Ectoin, a powerful molecule derived from extremophiles—microorganisms that thrive in extreme environments like deserts and salt lakes—has become a trending ingredient in skincare due to its exceptional protective properties. These extremophiles produce ectoin to shield themselves from harsh conditions, and when applied to the skin, ectoin acts as a potent barrier against environmental stressors such as pollution, UV radiation, and even temperature changes. This makes it especially valuable for urban dwellers exposed to environmental aggressors daily.

Ectoin not only offers protection but also excels at locking in moisture, enhancing the skin’s natural hydration levels while reducing inflammation. This dual action of shielding and moisturizing makes it a sought-after ingredient for those looking to combat the effects of pollution and prevent premature aging.

However, as with any potent ingredient, it’s important to use ectoin in balanced formulations. While it is generally well-tolerated by most skin types, those with extremely sensitive or reactive skin should monitor for any signs of irritation.

What is Bakuchiol and why is it everywhere?

Bakuchiol is a plant-based ingredient derived from the Babchi plant, celebrated for its gentle yet effective anti-aging properties. Often touted as a natural alternative to retinol, bakuchiol offers similar benefits—reducing fine lines, improving skin texture, and promoting collagen production—without the irritation or sensitivity that retinol can cause. This makes it an excellent choice for those with sensitive skin or anyone looking to avoid the harsh side effects sometimes associated with retinoids, such as redness, dryness, and peeling.

What makes bakuchiol trend-worthy is its ability to provide powerful anti-aging results while being much gentler on the skin. It’s particularly appealing for those seeking a more natural, plant-derived skincare option that doesn’t compromise on efficacy. While we don’t currently include bakuchiol in our formulations, it’s a great option for those looking to harness the benefits of retinol without the potential downsides.

Avoiding Greenwashing: STĀS Stays True to Science and Nature

It’s easy to be swayed by 'clean beauty' claims, but not all natural products live up to their promises. Many brands use greenwashing tactics to appear eco-friendly or natural, but in doing so, they may sacrifice the effectiveness of their products. The result? Skincare that may come with a higher price tag but delivers underwhelming results.

At STĀS, we don’t believe in trading science for trends. Our approach goes beyond just blending nature and science—we also go above and beyond standard clinical testing. Our products are extensively tested in real-life conditions to ensure they work not only in the lab but also in the day-to-day lives of our customers. This ensures that every formula we create delivers results you can truly see and feel.
